Did my family see the Ball of Redemption?

"There is in your outer atmosphere the celestial object that will be sent upon you in the will of the Eternal Father." - Our Lady, March 22, 1975

Our Lady of the Roses has always been right; She is not like us. We sinners make countless mistakes on a daily basis due to our fallen human nature.

Our Lady, the Mother of Jesus, was preserved by God from all this.

So when Our Lady says something, it is true. We might not understand it, but prayer and investigation will eventually shed light on what Our Lady meant, and why it is true.

Take for example Our Lady of the Roses prophecy given on June 30, 1984: "It has not started, My child, but there will be great confusion, and war shall break out in the western part of Germany."

At the time, Many Baysiders and critics of the message thought that Our Lady was clearly mistaken, that the quote should have been, "in West Germany." But it turned out that all those who doubted this message were mistaken themselves and Our Lady was proven correct, when on October 3, 1990 East and West Germany were united. The prophecy of a future war will take place in the now united Germany. This quote actually contained two prophecies, one being the reunification of Germany, which took place six years after this message was given.

So with this lesson in mind, I have paid even more attention to details in Our Lady's messages at Bayside and have given special attention when a word seems to be out of place, because this may indicate an important detail that is not immediately apparent. Several phrases in the messages have gnawed at me for years. Our Lady said on March 22, 1975 that the Ball of Redemption "is in your outer atmosphere" and on June 18, 1991, "it has been seen by the few."

To explain what I mean by this I need to tell a true story, what three members of my family witnessed (including myself) in August of 1975.

"Something is making the stars disappear!"

In August 1975 my family took our yearly vacation, that year at Le Trianon Resort at Blue Lake, California. We took our camper and planned to spend a week at Blue Lake, and then spend the second week at nearby Clear Lake.

So one night, between 9-10 p.m., my Dad, brother and myself were outside admiring the stars in the beautiful clear night sky. My brother was facing south, looking up at the stars. My Dad and I were facing north, with a mountain ridge in view. My brother was on the left, my Dad in the middle, and I was on the right.

Suddenly, my brother exclaimed, "Something is making the stars disappear!" I immediately thought to myself, what a ridiculous statement. My Dad and I wondered what in the world he was talking about.

And then we all saw it together: Something huge, perfectly round, was silhouetted in a glowing halo (similar to the glow around a new moon), and silently passed from southwest to northeast in front of us. It was visible for about 20-30 seconds, moving slowly across the night sky above.

Other campers who were outside likewise saw it, some pointing up to the sky.

What was most horrifying was the massive inferno of orange flames forming a tail far behind the black object. This tail of flames was not attached, but widely separated, perhaps about seven lengths behind. The flames formed a waving horizontal inferno. I was hard-pressed to find anything nearly resembling what I saw, until I found this slow motion video of a forest fire which is a small version, a similarity, to what I saw.

I was in shock, and thought this is the end of the world. My brother and I both thought it would hit a mountain in the distance, so big and low it seemed to us. Once it hits, I thought, we're all dead.

But it did not hit. To my surprise it passed behind the mountain in the distance. It was very far away.

Very black and unreflective

My brother told me that when he first saw the stars disappearing (the object was so big it blocked out the view of stars), there was no halo around it, nor flames behind it. The halo and flames appeared a few seconds later. What we can deduce from this observation is that when my brother first saw the object, it was not low enough yet in our atmosphere to ignite the gases. The surface of the object remained completely black throughout its visibility to us.

Very black, seemingly unreflective

One of my certain observations about this object is that it was completely black, much more than even a new moon. I could not make out any details on its surface. After viewing many space videos on Youtube, I found a comment which described the Rosetta Philae probe's discovery of "complex carbonaceous dust [on a comet], which is darker than asphalt" (watch video).

So I searched Our Lady of the Roses messages and found that Veronica, on more than one occasion, described it as a "black ball". From the February 10, 1978 message:

Veronica - Now Our Lady is raising Her crucifix and pointing over to the right side.  O my heavens!  (Veronica gags)  Oh, I can feel it; it’s like choking me.  There is a tremendous black ball in the sky, and it has a dark tail.  I never saw anything like this. It’s, it’s—oh, it’s terrible-looking.  It gives you a feeling of death.  It’s a horrible-looking thing.  It seems to be turning and turning and turning about in the sky.  Now it seems to be making a swerving curve, and it’s heading down, like here towards the trees!  Oh, it’s a frightening-looking sight!  O, Blessed Mother! (February 10, 1978)

In another vision on February 10, 1973 (listen), Veronica described the Ball of Redemption as having "streamers of fire coming out from behind it."

How big? Details point to its immense size

Of course the big question is: How big was it? I recall that its angular size was much wider than the moon, its circumference was much bigger, making its perfectly round shape very apparent. I would say it was between fist size to soccer ball size at arm's length, at least. My brother thought it was the size of two footballs, placed end to end in diameter.

My brother's recollection would make it bigger than my observations.

So I can safely say that it was at least 10-20 degrees in diameter, between the width of a fist to the width of a hand with extended fingers. This will provide one of the key observations for roughly determining its size as we discuss "the Rule of 57" later in this article.

Furthermore, my observation that it appeared perfectly round made for a shocking discovery when I researched more about this. The minimum size for an object to become perfectly round through the effects of its own gravity is 600 km, or approximately 373 miles in diameter.

How high in the atmosphere?

In determining how high in the atmosphere this object was, it would be best to first exclude where it was not. Typically meteors burn up in the mesosphere, which is around 50-85 km (31-53 miles) above the earth. The density of the atmosphere below that distance cause meteors to start burning up with friction, and they become very bright as a great deal of energy is given off in the form of light and heat.

Such was the case of the bus-sized fireball over Chelyabinsk, Russia, which on February 15, 2013 turned the morning sky brighter than midday, and multiple sonic booms broke windows. The energy released from this fireball was estimated around 500 kilotons, or the equivalent of 30-40 Hiroshima bombs (watch video).

No sonic booms, and no brightening of the object itself

When we discussed our observations years ago, my brother was curious why we didn't hear any sonic boom, why it was entirely silent. It was so big that he expected there to be a roar as it passed overheard. So I looked around on the internet and found that sonic booms from incoming meteors generally won't be heard above 60 miles.

So this is yet another observation verifying how far above the earth this giant object was: It had to be above 60 miles in the atmosphere.

In the outer atmosphere

Our Lady of the Roses was very specific in the March 22, 1975 message about the location of the Ball of Redemption, at least for one point in time: "There is in your outer atmosphere the celestial object that will be sent upon you in the will of the Eternal Father."

One definition of the upper atmosphere is "The part of the atmosphere above the troposphere. The upper atmosphere includes the mesosphere, the ionosphere, the thermosphere, and the exosphere."

The mesosphere is from 50-56 miles above the earth, which is the minimum height of the upper atmosphere.

If the object my family saw was in the thermosphere, this would fit the definition given by Our Lady on March 22, 1975, and this message was amazingly more than four months before my family witnessed seeing the object. This message may also have been a prophecy, which was fulfilled several months later.

What caused the formation of the huge, fiery tail?

Here's another reason why I think this object was in the thermosphere.

The fact that when my brother first saw the object there was no fiery tail nor halo indicates that the object was either in space or the exosphere (the highest point of the atmosphere). A few seconds later, at its closest approach, the gases around the object became hot enough to ignite. The thermosphere can reach up to 2,700 - 3,100 degrees F in temperature.

The thermosphere is between 56-620 miles above the earth's surface.

"The thermosphere extends from about 56 miles (90 km) to between 310 and 620 miles (500 and 1,000 km). Temperatures can get up to 2,700 degrees F (1,500 C) at this altitude." (Read more)

According to Wikipedia, "Within this layer of the atmosphere, ultraviolet radiation causes photoionization/photodissociation of molecules, creating ions in the ionosphere. Taking its name from the Greek θερμός (pronounced thermos) meaning heat, the thermosphere begins at about 80 km (50 mi) above sea level. At these high altitudes, the residual atmospheric gases sort into strata according to molecular mass (see turbosphere). Thermospheric temperatures increase with altitude due to absorption of highly energetic solar radiation. Temperatures are highly dependent on solar activity, and can rise to 1,700 °C (3,100 °F) or more." (Read more)

The highest temperatures are in the upper thermosphere: "High-energy X-rays and UV radiation from the Sun are absorbed in the thermosphere, raising its temperature to hundreds or at times thousands of degrees…. Variations in the amount of energy coming from the Sun exert a powerful influence on both the height of the top of this layer and the temperature within it. Because of this, the top of the thermosphere can be found anywhere between 500 and 1,000 km (311 to 621 miles) above the ground. Temperatures in the upper thermosphere can range from about 500° C (932° F) to 2,000° C (3,632° F) or higher." (Read more)

Experts contest what exactly is the uppermost layer of the atmosphere: "Although some experts consider the thermosphere to be the uppermost layer of our atmosphere, others consider the exosphere to be the actual 'final frontier' of Earth's gaseous envelope."

But the top layer of the thermosphere seems to be the most probable height of the object (311 to 621 miles), because the heat in this region would have been hot enough to ignite the gases surrounding the object that my family saw, and it would account for three observations: (1) that at the beginning it lacked a halo and a fiery tail; (2) entering the upper thermosphere would account for the formation of the halo and fiery tail; and (3) at the height of the thermosphere, this would account for the facts that it was silent (no sonic boom) and that the object did not light up and turn brilliantly bright (some fireballs have briefly turned night into the brightness of day for a split second), as is observed when meteors begin to burn up in the mesosphere at 56 miles and below.

The "rule of 57"

So my next step was finding a mathematical formula to approximate the size of the object that we saw. I found a formula called "the Rule of 57" which worked well.

Size if the object was 60 miles above the earth

By plugging in an angular size of 20 degrees (observed angular size of object in the sky) at a height of 60 miles in the atmosphere, the object would have been approximately 21 miles in diameter.

Size if the object was 600 miles above the earth

Of course, the higher the object was in the sky, the bigger its actual size. If the object was at the uppermost levels of the thermosphere, around 600 miles, then its size would be ten times larger, a whopping 210 miles in diameter. Even if the angular size was only 10 degrees (size of a fist in the night sky), at 600 miles distance it would have been around 105 miles in diameter.

The larger calculation of 210 miles in diameter is still less than the minimum of 373 miles in diameter for an object to become spherical, through the effects of its own gravity. This discrepancy could be explained in several ways: (1) my brother's observation about the angular size (two football lengths end to end) was more accurate; (2) the object was over 600 miles high; or (3) my brother's observation was more accurate and the object was over 600 miles high.

I recently discussed this sighting with my brother and bombarded him with every question I could think of, trying to put together as many pieces of evidence as possible. What I found out from our conversation was that my brother saw the object go directly overhead. He was at one point looking straight up. So now our discrepancies in the apparent size of the object make sense. At its closest approach, my brother saw it directly overhead and at its largest apparent size. From my perspective, it was already receding into the distance by the time I saw it. Therefore, it would have appeared smaller to me.

If I use my brother's perceived angular size of about two footballs end to end (around 30 angular degrees), at a height of 600 miles in the atmosphere, the object would be approximately 315 miles in diameter. If I increase the height to 800 miles high (and 30 angular degrees) the object would be approximately 421 miles in diameter. At this size, the object would have to be spherical, ball-like in shape, by the effects of gravity.

And that is what I saw: A massive, jet black and perfectly round sphere.

Let me be clear: We did not merely see a big meteor, we saw another world.

A comet, Veronica said it is not a sun

Our Lady of the Roses mentioned many times that the Ball of Redemption was a comet (the following messages specifically use the word "comet" when associated with the Ball of Redemption: February 10, 1973; March 25, 1973; May 30, 1973; July 25, 1975; August 14, 1978; August 25, 1985; and November 1, 1985).

Veronica also described in numerous visions that massive meteors would be breaking off of the main comet as it circled the earth. In the September 14, 1985 message Our Lady told Veronica, "No, My child, you do not know the force of these meteors. They shall burn until they hit the land."

Also, on May 10, 1973 Veronica described the Ball of Redemption as not being a sun, but something else: "And the tail, it's all colors of the rainbow. But there's great heat. The tail, there is—falling from the tail now is a great deal of what looks like vapor and smoke. Oh, it's a choking, smoky vapors. Oh! And I notice now the vapors cover the moon and the sun. So this is not a sun, but something—a ball that looks like a huge sun."

Clearly, the Ball of Redemption is a solid, rocky object, not a gaseous object like the sun.

Yet Our Lady of the Roses also mentioned that the Ball of Redemption would appear as a "second sun." Our Lady stated on December 31, 1974, "A second sun lies out in your atmosphere, the Ball of Redemption. I repeat, My children, it is not a myth, nor a story; it is a fact." This can be explained by the fact that a comet has a surrounding halo, or coma, that can be as large as the diameter of the sun, or larger. "Comet 17P/Holmes briefly had a tenuous dust atmosphere larger than the Sun. The Great Comet of 1811 also had a coma roughly the diameter of the Sun" (read more).

In all of the Bayside messages (other than Veronica's visions of hell), nothing frightened her more than the visions of the coming Ball of Redemption. She was truly terrified by its massive size. On September 7, 1973 Veronica described the Ball of Redemption: "it's tremendously large. Oh, it's the largest thing I've seen in my life. It's a huge ball!" Her visions of September 13, 1973; April 13, 1974; June 15, 1974; February 10, 1975; and September 14, 1985 (listen) are just some of the many messages describing the tremendous size of this object which will be the second part of the Great Chastisement to befall the world.

Comet Kohoutek?

Our Lady of the Roses message is directed to the entire world, a call for worldwide conversion and the restoration of the Roman Catholic Church to its former glory. Similar to Jonah's warnings to the Ninevites, if people respond to God's warnings and change their lives, God has granted reprieves from the punishment He has threatened. Such was the case in 1973, when Our Lady told Veronica on December 29, 1973 that the Great Warning and Chastisement had been delayed, due to the favorable response to Our Lady's message, and particularly through the efforts of Ver Demain in Canada of spreading the Bayside message throughout the world.

One of the questions is if Comet Kohoutek was the Ball of Redemption, as Comet Kohoutek had been discovered on March 7, 1973 and was clearly visible in the latter part of that year. Initially dubbed the "Comet of the Century," it was "discovered farther from the sun (73.9 million km) and earlier (7 months before perihelion) than any previously reported comet", and "its brightness when discovered indicated that it was exceptionally large." (Read more).

A disturbing discovery by scientists was that Comet Kohoutek's radio frequency radiation indicated the presence of the "molecules hydrogen cyanide and methyl cyanide."  Hydrogen cyanide is extremely lethal and has been used in capital punishment for the execution of criminals, and was used in World War I as a chemical weapon. According to Wikipedia, "A hydrogen cyanide concentration in the range of 100–200 ppm in air will kill a human within 10 to 60 minutes. A hydrogen cyanide concentration of 2000 ppm (about 2380 mg/m3) will kill a human in about one minute."

And it is not only Comet Kohoutek that contains hydrogen cyanide. Dr. Michael Mumma, senior scientist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, states, "Comet Hyakutake and indeed most other comets contain about 1/10 of 1% ice in the form of hydrogen cyanide. Hydrogen cyanide is, for those of you who may not know it, is what we use in some places to execute criminals. This is a highly poisonous gas."

Our Lady of the Roses message of August 14, 1973 may indicate the presence of hydrogen cyanide in the Ball of Redemption:

Veronica - And I see the people lying out beyond the doors. They seem to be falling over. Somewhere in the air, there is something that is cutting off their breathing, because they're clutching at their throats. And they're falling forward on their faces....
The explosion--it's like, almost like a bomb being dropped.... It's a ball. It's a fiery ball, and it's spinning and going about the globe. And it's trailing a long tail. It has gases. (August 14, 1973)

The possibility that Comet Kohoutek was the Ball of Redemption was further bolstered by a miraculous photo given on February 10, 1973 with the letters "KOH," a month prior to the discovery of Comet Kohoutek.

On the April 12, 1996 These Last Days radio show, Mrs. Ann Ferguson (Veronica's long-time personal secretary) revealed some interesting facts about Comet Kohoutek. The following is a transcription of Mrs. Ann Ferguson's statements during this radio show:

"On February 10, 1973 we received a miraculous photograph showing the letters KOH and no one knew what the letters meant. This was before Comet Kohoutek was discovered. We also received a miraculous photo of a huge fiery red ball with yellow and white coloring on top of the ball. When Veronica received this photo, she phoned the planetarium explaining this photo of the large fiery red ball with the yellow and white coloring on top of the ball. The man at the planetarium was amazed at this photo because he said it was the description of a comet, which has not been made known to the public. Shortly after the news of the Comet Kohoutek was publicized through all the news media. It was said that this comet was the most widely publicized comet of all times. They called it mysterious and awesome for its phantom qualities. On October 6, 1973, there was another miraculous photo showing the a large fiery red ball with yellow and white coloring on top of the Ball and a pilgrim holding a Rosary next to the Ball. Veronica said, the Rosary being held aloft symbolically holds back the Ball which Veronica stated was then the Comet Kohoutek due to pass near the [sun] on December 28, 1973, but averted by the many Rosaries prayed."

A great darkness over the earth

Another detail from Our Lady of the Roses message on August 14, 1973 indicates that a great darkness will cover the earth after the Ball of Redemption:

Veronica - Now I see a great, largeI know it's a powerhouse. It's a large building, a stone building. And they're pulling on all these levers. But I see fear, great fear in the faces of all these men. They're running up and down steps. There are levers on the steps, and they're pulling at these levers. But nothing's happening. And they'renow they're running down the stairs, and they're running outside. And when they run outside it's like going into total blackness. There are no lights, and it's dark, pitch black.
I see the men trying to walk outside. They're talking; two men are talking to each other by the door. They want to reach their cars, but they cannot find the distance. One man is groping his way, and the other is just standing. (August 14, 1973)

This corresponds to what scientists say would have occurred after the huge asteroid impact many years ago in the Yucatan peninsula. According to Cathy Plesko, research scientist in Applied Physics at Los Alamos National Laboratory, "the impact lofted all of this ash and debris and dust into the atmosphere, blanketing the entire atmosphere with a thick opaque layer that made it night ... you couldn't have seen your hand in front of your face."

Near-earth objects

Since 1998, the United States, European Union, and other countries have made a concerted effort to discover and catalogue near-earth objects or NEOs, especially potentially hazardous asteroids in earth-crossing orbits. As of 2018, there were over 18,000 known NEOs, with an average of 40 being discovered every week. The present catalogue of these objects is staggering, as illustrated by this animation by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Final chastisement of the world

The Ball of Redemption will be the second part of the Great Chastisement, following the first part which is the Third World War. Our Lady has called the chastising comet the Ball of Redemption (please read Directives 60, 61 and 62), because many will turn back to God through this chastisement, and save their souls before they die. The Ball of Redemption will be guided by the Eternal Father and be of supernatural origin.

This comet has been prophesied not only by the Bayside apparitions, but is probably Wormwood in the Bible (Revelations 8:11) that falls into the sea. The chastising comet has also been prophesied by several Catholic saints, including St. Hildegard.

Miracle of the Sun at Fatima Portugal, October 13, 1917

Veronica Lueken's description of the Ball of Redemption has several similarities to what Fatima witnesses described during the Miracle of the Sun given at Fatima, Portugal, on October 13, 1917 and witnessed by at least 70,000 people. This event may have been a prophecy of the Ball of Redemption descending upon the world. According to eyewitnesses, "The sun trembled, the sun made sudden incredible movements outside all cosmic laws--the sun 'danced' according to the typical expression of the people." ("O Seculo" newspaper, October 15, 1917; quoted in Whole Truth of Fatima, Vol. I, Bro. Michael of the Holy Trinity, p. 337)

On July 1, 1973, Veronica described the Ball of Redemption as twirling in every direction (similar to the zigzagging of the Miracle of the Sun). On April 14, 1984, Veronica saw it bouncing crazily: "Now I notice that there is a tremendous ball now setting out in the sky by the sun. It's like two giant suns in the sky. But the ball on the right has a tail, and it's starting to move now around the sun. And as it goes it's bouncing crazily, as though it's going off course in some manner, this ball."

The second similarity is that Veronica described the Ball of Redemption as giving off "all the colors of the rainbow" (May 10, 1973), which was also what witnesses saw at Fatima.

Describing the Miracle of the Sun, Father Inacio Lourenço stated that "It spun like a firewheel, taking on all the colors of the rainbow." It looked "like a ball of snow, revolving upon itself." (Whole Truth of Fatima, Vol. I, p. 337)

Maria do Carmo recalls: "The sun took on all the colors of the rainbow. Everything took on the same colors: our faces, our clothes, the earth itself." (Whole Truth of Fatima, Vol. I, p. 338)

The Miracle of the Sun was not only an awe-inspiring phenomenon, with witnesses marveling at the display, it was also a frightening event. According to Bro. Michael of the Holy Trinity, "the spectators had the irresistible impression that the sun was going to fall on them."

Almeida Garrett stated:

"Then, suddenly, one heard a clamor, a cry of anguish breaking from all the people. The sun, whirling wildly, seemed to loosen itself from the firmament and advance threateningly upon the earth as if to crush us with its huge and fiery weight. The sensation during those moments was terrible." (Whole Truth of Fatima, Vol. I, p. 339)

The description of Father Inacio Lourenço is most often cited, according to Bro. Michael, because it is the most detailed description:

"I was only nine years old at this time, and I went to the local village school (about 12 miles from Fatima). At about midday we were surprised by the shouts and cries of some men and women who were passing in the street in front of the school. The teacher, a good, pious woman, though nervous and impressionable, was the first to run into the road with the children after her.

"Outside, the people were shouting and weeping and pointing to the sun, ignoring the questions of the schoolmistress. It was the Great Miracle, which one could see quite distinctly from the top of the hill where my village was situated…

"I feel incapable of describing what I saw and felt. I looked fixedly at the sun, which seemed pale and did not hurt my eyes. Looking like a ball of snow revolving upon itself, it suddenly seemed to come down in a zigzag, menacing the earth. Terrified, I ran and hid myself among the people, who were weeping and expecting the end of the world at any moment.

"During those long moments of the solar prodigy objects around us turned all the colors of the rainbow…."
(Whole Truth of Fatima, Vol. I, pp. 342-343)

I was also only nine years old when I saw this immense object in the night sky over Blue Lake, California. I likewise, during those moments, thought that it was the end of the world.

I have had flashbacks of the event several times a week, for the past 44 years.

Veronica - I know it's a comet. It, it's a round ball of fire, and it's traveling at a very fast pace through the sky. And it's so hot! I can feel the heat, the great heat of this long tail. As it's going through space, it's shooting out a tremendous fiery tail. Oh!
Our Lady - "I repeat, My child, your country shall not escape the destruction of the fires, as you will be planet-struck.
"As in the days of Noe, My child, many shall reject the Message from Heaven." - Our Lady, July 25, 1975

"The devastation of the Chastisement shall be a scene to many far greater in scope and magnitude than mankind has ever seen in the past nor ever will in the future. For there will be few left upon earth if I do not come and stop the terrible War and the calamity of the Ball of Redemption that will soon hit mankind. Man shall not be prepared for this great trial. Only those who act upon and listen to the counsel from Heaven shall be ready. And those who are not prepared--sad, My children, but true, that many shall die of fright." - Jesus, June 1, 1978
