Archbishop Sean P. O'Malley called on young people yesterday to resist influences such as television that threaten to ``brainwash'' them and said society would be well-served if Catholic politicians and other leaders were to live according to the teachings of their faith.
      TV is a ``glass idol'' that has too prominent a role in most people's lives, O'Malley told 1,300 Catholic teens assembled at Merrimack College in North Andover.
     ``We are becoming more and more alone,'' he said. ``The great spiritual sicknesses of our age and our culture come in great part from the extreme individualism and materialism of our age. Television is the pulpit of those influences.''
     ``MTV packages it in a very attractive way for our young people,'' he told the boisterous crowd. ``But it's poisonous . . . be aware that there are people out there who want to brainwash you. Don't let yourself be brainwashed.''

Parents Television Council blasts MTV as "smut peddlers"...

Reuters/Hollywood Reporter reported on February 2, 2005:

Conservative watchdog group Parents Television Council blasted MTV as "smut peddlers" Tuesday, accusing the music cable network of targeting young viewers with oversexed programming.

The PTC found fault with the teen-targeted network based on an examination of 171 hours of programming that aired the week of March 20 last year, during its annual "Spring Break" celebration. The analysis, contained in a report titled "MTV Smut Peddlers," spotted 13 sexual scenes per hour in MTV's reality series, as well as 32 instance of foul language per hour in its music videos.

"There's no question that TV influences the attitudes and perceptions of young viewers, and MTV is deliberately marketing its raunch to millions of innocent children," PTC president L. Brent Bozell said.

The report declared reality series "Making the Band 2" the channel's most offensive series, chronicling 208 instances of foul language in four total hours.
